In Cambodia, ITM researchers are mapping malaria hotspots, i.e. geographical locations where malaria parasites are able to survive and the points from which they spread throughout the region. The ultimate goal? To make the entire region malaria-free. The project not only identifies the location of the hotspots, but also gives an indication of how to identify and eliminate them. Based on existing data and using specialised software, the researchers look for and pinpoint the unique characteristics of specific parasite locations to determine the best way to eliminate malaria transmission.
